I like getting cards for which friends and family have done the artwork or photo but doing that kind of stuff isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But never mind, that’s what the internet is for!
If you don’t have any images that you want to use for your cards, the web is full of them. I particularly recommend Flickr.com, Yahoo’s photo-sharing site. Many of these photos are just family snaps but some are really superb and would make excellent cards.
People upload their photos onto Flickr at the rate of about 6,000 per minute, and when they do so they tick a few boxes to indicate whether they are happy for you to use their photos and if so, in what way. To make cards individually for friends and family (not commercially), there are two classes of Flickr images that we can use; those with an Attribution License and those with an Attribution Non-Commercial License. In both cases we must put the name of the photographer on the card and attribute the picture to them (fair enough, I reckon!).
For example, if you go to the search page for Attribution License photos, and enter “boats” as the search term, you will see an absolutely stunning series of boat photos that you could choose among for your Fathers Day card (unless since I wrote this another 1,000 boat photos have been uploaded and they’re all rubbish); similarly on the search page for Attribution Non-Commercial License photos.
For those of you who don’t fancy searching, I’ve picked out from these a few dadly options, namely a rather stunning boat photo, a highly atmospheric garden shed, a stylish table football shot, and a bottle of beer doing something interesting (no stereotyping there, then).
For cheap printing, digital photo printing services often have introductory offers of free photos plus p&p that work out at a few pence each. Martin Lewis’s MoneySavingExpert free photo page isn’t up to date but is a good place to start for deals; if you click on the links on his page, you’ll be taken straight to the latest offers from each company.
Tomorrow, how to make cards with your computer and without glue.
